FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Is part exchanging better than selling a luxury watch privately?

Yes. Part exchanging is significantly faster, completely eliminates the threat of online peer-to-peer marketplace fraud, and often yields a higher valuation offset against your replacement watch purchase.

What documents do I need to bring for an exchange?

To achieve the absolute highest valuation tier, please bring your watch along with its original warranty papers, certificates, presentation box, and any spare bracelet links if available. We also require a valid government-issued photo ID for standard compliance.

Are your watches certified authentic?

Every single luxury timepiece passing through our Hatton Garden boutique undergoes rigorous multi-point authenticity verifications by our specialist team and comes backed by our comprehensive 12-month warranty.

How part exchange works at Kings & Queens

Part exchange lets you trade the watch you own towards the one you want, in a single transaction. We value your watch, and that value is offset against the watch you are buying from our stock. If your watch turns out to be worth more than the one you choose, we pay you the difference by secure bank transfer.

The valuation is free and carries no obligation. Send photos and the reference number over WhatsApp to +44 (0)7888 888835 for a quick initial figure, then confirm everything in person at our Hatton Garden showroom or by sending the watch to us fully insured. Your watch is authenticated before the exchange is finalised.

An exchange, step by step

Here is how a typical part exchange runs from first message to collection, with no prices involved, just the order of events.

  1. Choose the watch you would like from our stock, or tell us what you are looking for.
  2. Send us details and photos of the watch you want to trade in, including its box and papers.
  3. We give you an initial part exchange figure, based on the reference, condition and completeness.
  4. You bring or send your watch, and we authenticate it in person before confirming the figure.
  5. The agreed value is set against your new watch. If yours is worth more, we pay you the difference.
  6. Your new watch is handed over at the showroom, or delivered fully insured and signed for.

There are no hidden fees or commission in the exchange. The value we agree for your watch is the value that is credited, and the difference between the two watches is the only money that changes hands.

Trading up, across or down

A part exchange is not only for moving to a more expensive watch. You might want to swap a steel sports model for a dress watch, move from Rolex to Audemars Piguet or Patek Philippe, or exchange one larger piece for something simpler. Because we buy your watch outright, the exchange works in any direction.

If your watch is worth more than the one you choose, we pay you the balance by bank transfer. If it is worth less, you pay the difference between the two. Either way, it is one agreed figure for your watch, one price for ours and a single transaction to complete.

Which watches we take in exchange

We buy and part exchange watches from the six brands we specialise in: Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Richard Mille, Cartier and Hublot. That covers everything from a Rolex Submariner or Datejust to an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, a Patek Philippe Aquanaut or a Cartier Santos.

A watch does not have to be recent or in perfect condition. Older pieces and watches without papers can still be exchanged. We simply value them honestly for what they are, and we tell you how we reached the figure. If you want to check a reference before you get in touch, the brands' own websites, such as rolex.com, list their current collections.

How we value your watch for part exchange

The figure we offer in part exchange is worked out in the same way as an outright purchase. These are the points we look at.

  • Reference and generation: the exact model, its size and the year it was made
  • Dial variant: colour, type and whether the dial is original
  • Condition: wear to the case and crystal, and any heavy polishing
  • Bracelet or strap: stretch, clasp condition and the presence of spare links
  • Box and papers: a complete set is valued higher
  • Service history and original parts: documented work and original components help

For a fuller explanation of each factor, see our valuation page. The key point for an exchange is the same as for a sale: bring everything that came with the watch, and do not polish it beforehand.

Part exchange or sell privately?

Selling a valuable watch privately and then buying another separately means two transactions, two sets of risks and usually a gap of weeks in between. You deal with strangers, arrange viewings and have to be sure that every payment is genuine. A part exchange removes most of that: one conversation, one authenticated trade-in and one handover.

The watch you receive also comes with the protections that apply to everything we sell. Every watch is inspected and authenticated by experienced specialists before it is offered, each listing states whether the box and papers are included, and pre-owned watches carry our 12-month mechanical warranty from delivery unless the listing says otherwise. UK delivery is free, fully insured and signed for.

Exchange towards a watch we source for you

If the watch you want is not in our stock, tell us. We source specific watches for clients on request, and your trade-in can be part of that conversation from the start. Knowing what you own and what you are looking for lets us talk through the whole exchange in one go, rather than treating the sale and the purchase separately.

If you see a watch on our site that you would like to secure while your exchange is arranged, a £100 deposit reserves it for 3 working days. The deposit is non-refundable, but on request it can be used as store credit towards another watch.

Preparing your watch for an exchange

  • Leave the case and bracelet unpolished, whatever their condition.
  • Find the warranty card or certificate and note the reference number.
  • Gather the box, booklets, spare links and any service paperwork.
  • Take daylight photos of the dial, case sides, clasp and caseback.
  • Have a shortlist of the watches you are interested in, or a clear idea of what you want.

Part exchange FAQs

What happens if my watch is worth more than the one I am buying?

We pay you the difference. The value of your watch is offset against your new one, and any balance in your favour is paid by secure bank transfer.

Is the part exchange valuation free?

Yes. The valuation is free and you are under no obligation to go ahead. You can take the figure away and think about it.

Can I exchange towards a watch you do not have in stock?

Yes. We source specific watches for clients on request, and we can discuss your trade-in at the same time.

Does the watch I buy come with a warranty?

Pre-owned watches carry our 12-month mechanical warranty from delivery, unless the listing says otherwise. New watches are covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

Can I exchange a watch without its box and papers?

Yes. A complete set is valued higher, but we accept watches without them and authenticate each one in person before the exchange is confirmed.

Can I compare both watches before I decide?

Yes. At a showroom appointment you can see your current watch and the one you are considering side by side, ask questions and take your time. Appointments are private, so there is no pressure to decide on the day.

Are there any fees for a part exchange?

No. There are no hidden fees or commission. The value we agree for your watch is exactly what is credited towards your new one.
