Ladies Rolex: choosing the right one.

Watch guide · Buying · 11 min read · Updated October 2026 · Kings & Queens Watches, Hatton Garden

Choosing a ladies Rolex: Lady-Datejust 28, Datejust 31 and 36, Oyster Perpetual and Day-Date 36, with sizing advice, metals, diamonds and bracelets.

In short

  • The classic ladies Rolex is the Lady-Datejust, now 28mm, but many women choose 31mm, 34mm or 36mm.
  • Choose by wrist size and style rather than by label. Plenty of women wear a 36mm Rolex, and some wear larger.
  • Metals run from steel through steel and gold (Rolesor) to solid gold and platinum, with factory diamonds on many models.
  • The bracelet changes the character: Oyster for everyday, Jubilee for a dressier look, President for the most formal.
  • Buy authenticated, with original diamonds and a warranty, and keep any spare links.

Choosing a ladies Rolex used to mean choosing a small Lady-Datejust. Today the choice is far wider, and many women wear a 31mm, 36mm or even a larger watch. This guide sets out the main ladies Rolex models, the sizes, metals and bracelets, how to find the right fit for your wrist, and what to check when you buy, whether the watch is for you or a gift.

What makes a watch a ladies Rolex?

Rolex has made smaller watches for women for many decades, and models such as the Lady-Datejust were designed for smaller wrists from the start. Today, though, size matters more than any label. A ladies Rolex is simply a Rolex that suits the person wearing it, and that might be a 28mm Lady-Datejust, a 36mm Oyster Perpetual or a 40mm Day-Date.

When people search for a Rolex for women, they usually mean one of three things: a smaller case, a dressier style with gold or diamonds, or a model with a long history as a ladies watch. The sections below cover all three, starting with the watch that defines the category.

The Lady-Datejust 28: the classic ladies Rolex

The Lady-Datejust is the watch most people picture when they think of a ladies Rolex. It has the Datejust's date window and cyclops lens in a smaller case, and it comes in a wide range of metals, bezels and dials. The current 28mm size arrived in the mid-2010s, replacing the earlier 26mm case, and it gives the watch slightly more presence while keeping it delicate on the wrist.

Most Lady-Datejust models combine gold with either steel or solid gold, often with a fluted bezel or a diamond-set bezel. On the Jubilee bracelet it is elegant enough for evening wear; in solid gold on the President bracelet it is one of the most formal watches Rolex makes. If you want a ladies Rolex that looks unmistakably like a Rolex, this is the natural place to start.

Pre-owned, the earlier 26mm Lady-Datejust is worth knowing too. References such as the 69173 and 79173 in steel and yellow gold are small by today's standards, which keeps them affordable, and they suit a slim wrist beautifully.

Datejust 31 and 36: the versatile choice

The Datejust 31 sits between the Lady-Datejust and the classic Datejust 36. For many women it is the ideal size: noticeable without being large, and comfortable from morning to evening. It is made in steel, in every combination of steel and gold, and with a choice of smooth, fluted and diamond-set bezels, so it is easy to find one that suits your style.

The Datejust 36 is the original Datejust size, first introduced in 1945, and it has always been worn by men and women alike. It is a popular ladies Rolex for anyone who likes a watch with a little more presence, and it suits a wide range of wrists. See our Rolex Datejust collection for the references we hold, and the history of the Datejust for more on how the model developed.

Choosing between the two usually comes down to how you wear a watch. If you prefer something discreet that slips under a cuff, the 31 is the safer choice. If you want a watch that is noticed, and you often wear larger jewellery, the 36 tends to feel more balanced.

Oyster Perpetual: the everyday ladies Rolex

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual is the simplest Rolex: time only, no date, in Oystersteel on an Oyster bracelet. In recent years it has been made in 28, 31, 34, 36 and 41mm, and the smaller sizes make an excellent everyday ladies Rolex. Bright dial colours have made the Oyster Perpetual one of the most talked-about Rolex models, and classic silver, black and blue dials are always available too.

Because it has no gold, no gem-setting and no date, the Oyster Perpetual is also usually the most affordable way into a ladies Rolex. Our guide to the cheapest Rolex explains where it sits in the range.

Day-Date 36: the most formal ladies Rolex

The Rolex Day-Date is made only in 18ct gold or platinum, and it shows the day of the week spelt out in full at 12 o'clock as well as the date. The 36mm size is the traditional one and is worn by many women; the 40mm is larger and bolder. It comes on the President bracelet, created for the Day-Date, and with a great choice of dials, many of them gem-set.

A Day-Date 36 is a serious watch, heavier than a steel Datejust because of its solid gold or platinum case and bracelet. That weight is part of its appeal for many owners. If you want the most formal ladies Rolex, with a bracelet that feels like fine jewellery, this is the model.

Sporty options: Yacht-Master 37 and beyond

Not every woman wants a dress watch. The Yacht-Master 37 is the mid-size version of Rolex's sailing watch, with a raised, rotating 60-minute bezel and a sportier character than the Datejust. Versions in steel and Everose gold combine that sporty look with a little warmth.

Some women prefer full-size sports models, such as the Submariner, GMT-Master II or Daytona, and wear them well. There is no rule against it: a ladies Rolex is whatever Rolex you love wearing. If you are unsure, try a sports model on beside a Datejust 31 or 36 and see which you reach for.

How to choose the right size of ladies Rolex

Case diameter is only part of the story. Two watches with the same diameter can wear differently because of the length of the lugs, the thickness of the case and the width of the bracelet. The best guide is always to try a few sizes on, but these points help you narrow it down.

  • Measure your wrist. Wrap a soft tape or a strip of paper around it where you wear a watch. As a rough guide, a slim wrist tends to suit 26 to 31mm, an average wrist 31 to 36mm, and a larger wrist 36mm and above.
  • Look at the lugs. The lugs should sit within the width of your wrist. If they overhang the edges, the watch is too large for you.
  • Consider the bezel. A diamond-set or polished gold bezel makes a watch look larger; a smooth steel one keeps it understated.
  • Think about how you dress. A smaller ladies Rolex slips under a cuff. A larger one makes more of a statement.
  • Check the bracelet length. Links can be removed or added, so ask whether the watch comes with its spare links.

Our guide to Rolex sizes and bracelets compares every model's case size and explains how each bracelet wears.

Metals and two-tone options

Metal changes both the look and the price of a ladies Rolex. Rolex uses its own names for its metals, which are worth knowing when you read a listing.

  • Oystersteel. Rolex's steel. Hard-wearing, discreet and the most affordable choice.
  • Yellow Rolesor. Steel combined with 18ct yellow gold, usually on the bezel, crown and centre links. The classic two-tone Rolex look.
  • Everose Rolesor. Steel with 18ct Everose gold, Rolex's own rose gold alloy. Warm and modern.
  • White Rolesor. Steel with a white gold bezel. It looks like steel at a glance but has a brighter shine.
  • 18ct gold and platinum. Solid yellow, white or Everose gold, and platinum on some models. Heavier, more formal and more expensive.

The last digit of most modern references tells you the metal, which our guide to Rolex reference numbers explains in a simple table.

Diamonds on a ladies Rolex

Rolex sets diamonds on many of its ladies models: on the bezel, as hour markers, or across the whole dial. Factory diamonds are carefully matched and set, and they are usually reflected in the reference. The 126283RBR in our listings, for example, is a Datejust 36 with a diamond-set bezel.

Diamonds added after the watch left Rolex are a different matter. Aftermarket diamonds usually lower the value of a watch and can make it harder to sell later, however much they sparkle. When you buy a diamond-set ladies Rolex, ask whether the diamonds are original to the watch, and buy from a dealer who will tell you clearly.

Bracelets for a ladies Rolex

The bracelet does as much as the case to set the character of a watch. The Oyster bracelet, with its three flat links, is the sporty, everyday choice. The Jubilee, with five smaller links, was created for the Datejust in 1945 and drapes more softly on the wrist. The President bracelet, with its rounded three-piece links, was made for the Day-Date and is reserved for precious metals.

Many women prefer the Jubilee on a Datejust or Lady-Datejust because it feels lighter and more like jewellery. If you are choosing your first ladies Rolex, try the same watch on both an Oyster and a Jubilee bracelet if you can; the difference is surprising.

New or pre-owned ladies Rolex?

Buying pre-owned gives you the widest choice: current models, discontinued sizes such as the 26mm Lady-Datejust, and dials that are no longer made. It also means you can see the exact watch, with its condition, box and papers, before you commit. A watch sold new since July 2015 may still be within Rolex's five-year guarantee, which the warranty card will show.

When you compare pre-owned ladies Rolex watches, compare like with like: the same reference, metal and bezel. Then look at condition, originality and completeness. Our guide to buying a pre-owned Rolex covers every check worth making.

Buying a ladies Rolex as a gift

A Rolex makes a memorable gift, but size is the hardest part to get right when the watch is a surprise. If you can, borrow a watch she already wears and compare its size and bracelet length. Choose a model with an adjustable bracelet, and make sure the spare links are included so the watch can be fitted properly later.

Style matters as much as size. Think about the jewellery she wears every day: yellow gold, rose gold or white metals. A ladies Rolex in a matching metal will feel like part of her wardrobe from the first day. If you are unsure, a steel or white Rolesor watch goes with almost everything.

Every watch we sell comes with 14 days to return it for a full refund, and pre-owned watches carry our 12-month mechanical warranty from delivery, unless the listing says otherwise. Looking after a ladies Rolex

A ladies Rolex is built to be worn every day, but a little care keeps it at its best. Screw the crown down fully after setting the time or date, rinse the watch in fresh water after swimming in the sea, and keep it away from strong magnets. Perfume and hand cream can build up between bracelet links, so a gentle clean with warm water and a soft brush now and then is worthwhile.

Have the watch serviced when it needs it. Our sister business, Alpha Group, is in the same building and carries out watch servicing, repairs and restoration; see Service & Repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Which ladies Rolex is the classic choice?

The Lady-Datejust and the Datejust 31. Both have the Datejust's date and cyclops, a wide choice of metals and bezels, and the option of the Jubilee bracelet. The Datejust 36 is the classic choice for anyone who prefers a slightly larger watch.

What size Rolex should a woman wear?

Whatever size suits her wrist and style. As a rough guide, 26 to 31mm suits a slim wrist, 31 to 36mm an average wrist, and 36mm and above a larger wrist or anyone who likes a bolder look. Trying watches on is the best test.

Can a woman wear a men's Rolex?

Yes. Many women wear 36mm, 40mm and 41mm Rolex watches, including sports models. A ladies Rolex is defined by the person wearing it, not by a label.

What is the difference between the Lady-Datejust and the Datejust 31?

Size. The current Lady-Datejust is 28mm and the Datejust 31 is 31mm. Both share the Datejust design, date and cyclops, so the choice comes down to how much presence you want on the wrist.

Is a ladies Rolex cheaper than a larger one?

Within the same model and metal, a smaller case is usually lower on Rolex's price list. But gold, platinum and diamonds raise the price considerably, so a gem-set ladies Rolex can cost far more than a larger steel watch.

How can I tell if the diamonds are original?

Factory diamonds are usually reflected in the reference and on the papers, and they are set to a very high standard. A specialist can check the setting and the dial. Ask the seller directly, and buy from a dealer who states it in writing.

Can you find a specific ladies Rolex for me?

Yes. We source specific watches for clients on request. Tell us the model, size, metal and dial you want, and any preference about box and papers, and we will let you know what we can find.
